today feels like this: series one
one day I drew an abstract depiction of what it felt like for me to be alive that day (blue). it was a nondescript substituting day at BHS, and I did not feel particularly great, but not bad either, just quiet. it was raining softly, in May, and I felt like I could accept that. since then, I've been drawing these every few days, just when I feel like it. I think they look nicer side-by-side than on their own.... comment to share what you think...
mountain misery (both a plant and a disorder)
in April and May I paid two short visits to the Yosemite region and came home with this disorder I'll call "mountain misery," which is also the name of a plant whose summer fragrance permeates the air at Berkeley Tuolumne Camp and characterizes the sweet fresh air of so many areas in the California Sierra mountains. in this case, the 'misery' refers to an increased longing to spend all my time in those great outdoors and the withdrawal I tend to undergo when returning to "real life" (which at the time included substitute teaching evermore antsy and impatient high school students)... in the end, it's still worth it! I plan to go camping as much as possible this summer– get my money's worth out of a year-long Yosemite pass!

sketching between classes
if I happened to have a SUBstantial break while subbing at Berkeley High, I would often go to the Public Library to sketch from all sorts of art or reference books. so much inspiration can be found at the Public Library– don't you forget that! these are just a few pages from my sketchbook on sub days:

SUB-HERO: it begins

Brush Pen keeps me goin'
with the exception of the ethnic dance festival block print project, it's been weeks since I've dedicated much time to drawing (or writing in my notebooks). neglecting my drawing practice makes me feel irritable and depressed after a while... so a couple days ago I went to a cafe with Julian to draw had a tumultuous time of it– but things turned up ever so slightly when I began to enjoy using my new brush pens. I've been spending a couple minutes drawing with them each day since. aaahhhhhh....
SF Ethnic Dance Festival notecards
so after I gave the hula dancer block print to my Kumu Hula, she asked me if I could design and print cards for the panelists at this year's sfEDF auditions... how cool! this is the final version of the block print, which I nitpicked for several days, but this one's only printed in my notebook with stamp ink, not the sticky real deal ink. I also did the text stamps on the left for this project, including the little "SHL" logo which I plan to use on future work! yay!

Fashion Books lead to Fashion doodles
it's not that I'm more passionate about Fashion than many other things, but I can get swept up and inspired by it in an instant... so I guess I'll keep doodling.

Klimt Sketches
A couple mornings ago I took an hour to do some mindless sketching out of one of my favorite art books, "Gustav Klimt: Drawings & Watercolors." I often forget how much I love his work.
Holiday Card Block Print
On Thanksgiving Day I felt completely relaxed– I think the fact that it was a holiday, the fact that everyone ought to relax on that day, lent me such a carefree attitude... that, plus looking forward to our large, collaborative dinner made it all the more nice. Anyway, after getting my dish going on the stove that morning (collard greens and bacon– nine bunches of collard greens!) I spent some time working on a holiday block print to send to friends and family this year:

Public Library Lunch Break
A few weeks ago I was subbing at Berkeley High and had an extra class period to relax during lunch, so I spent my break in the Berkeley Public Library downtown. I've always been fascinated by and sort of in love with Classical sculpture and that heavenly Renaissance style. I ended up sketching some Renaissance sculpture out of an Art History book... and had a fine time doing so...

MACY*S
Julian and I had a very nice time visiting his family in Seattle/Vashon Island, WA a couple weeks ago. Despite the both of us feeling under the weather most of the week, we soaked up some crisp, bright sunny weather and spent our days and evenings walking around town and eating exquisite food. Thanks to Papa Birchman, Robin, and Mama Birchman for having us... looking forward to seeing you again in December!12 July 2010
